Comcast has deployed D3. Comcast designed the new gateway, but as reported earlierthe operator has tapped Arris to build a version powered by an Intel Corp.
The new gateway supports xFi, a cloud-based home WiFi management platform that the cable operator rolled out in May. Among other specs, the new gateway supports and 8x8 WiFi antenna array that leans on It also uses Multi-user, Multi-input, Multi-output technology to deliver top speeds to dozens of devices hanging off the network, the company said.
Comcast said it has tested WiFi speeds of more than 1. Comcast believes that the WiFi capacities of the new gateway will be enough to blanket the vast majority of homes with WiFi, but later this month will start to offer optional, complementary xFi Pod devices that use mesh technology to complete the whole-home WiFi scenario by extending the range of the system and eliminating dead zones.
Comcast said it has made the new gateway easy to set up and onboard, as customers need only plug it in, scan a QR code with the xFi app and follow the prompts.

Home News Distribution Cable Operators. Cable Operators. It's no secret that modems provided by your ISP can leave a lot to be desired. While we generally recommend you use your own hardware when it comes to your internet connection, plenty of people just go with the standard default modem and router. Comcast is making that process just a little bit easier thanks to the xFi Advanced Gateway modem and router. The modem, which the company is billing as the most advanced device it's ever made, made its debut back in May, but starting today it's available in every market that Comcast offers gigabit internet.
It allows you to set up your WiFi, change and customize settings, set up profiles for use and more. If you want to turn off the WiFi to your kids' devices at 9PMyou can easily do that in the xFi app. The real advantage of the Gateway modem, though is in its speeds. When developing the tech of this device, the team recognized that WiFi is the primary way that people use the internet, even for bandwidth-heavy activities such as streaming video.
The goal, then, was to increase the WiFi speeds of the xFi Advanced Gateway, rather than expecting customers to use a wired Ethernet connection. The modem uses a Now, that's not likely to happen in practice in a standard house because of obstructions like walls and floors, but the team was able to get 1. The standards also supports MU-MIMO multiple input, multiple outputwhich means you can connect a larger number of devices more efficiently to a single network.1965
It's important to note, though, that these features aren't specific to Comcast's xFi Advanced Gateway. This is a standard that is being applied across modems, routers and devices, but as with any new standard, it's slow going. There still aren't a whole lot of devices that have this advanced tech, and they'll cost you. And all of this, of course, is dependent on your internet speed from your provider; if you aren't paying for gigabit internet, you won't see a lot of these speed benefits.
According to Stirling, around 10 million of Comcast's subscribers are, indeed, eligible for this service. The current setup of device to hub to app to router to modem isn't easy for people who aren't tech savvy -- again, the team wanted to ensure that customers at multiple levels of tech literacy can take advantage of this modem's advanced features.
The idea was to ensure that current and future IoT devices are easily compatible with this modem for the long term. This Gateway is intended to work across a large area, thanks to the 8x8 antenna array, which includes eight antennas to transmit WiFi signals and another eight to receive them. However, if that isn't quite enough for your home, Comcast is introducing a mesh WiFi system early next year. It's currently in an advanced trial stage.

The bottom line is that you're almost always going to get better customization options and more control when you buy your own hardware, rather than using what your ISP provides. But for the millions of customers who do, this is a good option for those who want gigabit speeds but don't want to maintain their own equipment like your parents. Buyer's Guide. Log in. Sign up. Most providers, including Xfinity, provide lists of compatible modems and routers for customers interested in using their own equipment.
The router takes the signal from the modem and makes it accessible to your devices. If you have Xfinity, speed is probably the biggest thing you can improve by purchasing your own router. The extra overhead can help the router perform better when multiple devices are hitting it hard, making your internet connection less likely to slow down or boot users off.
Overview of Xfinity Gateways
Speed on routers is a little tricky, though. Actual speeds on routers can be as low as a third of the advertised maximum speed. But since routers usually offer seemingly unbelievable maximum speeds, experiencing even one third of what they advertise will still allow you to see improvements as long as your connection is fast enough. These represent the wireless standard or protocol used by the router.
This standard is part of what dictates the speed and range the router is capable of. Look for a router that supports Wi-Fi 6 is a nice bonus, but it may not be worth the cost quite yet. You want to make sure the range of your router matches up with the size of your home.Ros tf2 tutorial
If the range of a router is low, devices that are far away will get weak signals or no signal at all. Press Room See More. But as home networks have become more complex and an increasing number of devices connect to them, these providers see an opportunity to bring order to chaos. Newer company-provided routers give their customers tools needed to manage home networks.
And yes, third-party routers have offered these kinds of features for a while. Depending on how much you spend on the hardware, it can pay for itself in a year or two. Comcast sees the writing on the screen, and in began to roll out this advanced gateway. The xFi gateway looks a lot slicker. While my router has four gigabit Ethernet ports for hardwired connections, the xFi only has two.
Setup is easy, utilizing the xFi app available for both Apple and Android devices, which walks you through the process, step-by-step. The app makes it simple to name your network, set up secure connections and begin the process of organizing your network.
It is this app, in fact, that is the key to managing the devices and people on a home network. It lets you set up profiles for people or places and then assign devices to them.my new Cable modem XB7
You can then see who is using data, and when. If you have children, you can use built-in limitations to control when they get onto the internet. Over time, this quiets down. As is the case with most third-party routers, it has a built-in, web-based settings page for really granular adjustments. Some settings that should be available in the app — such as toggling the firewall on or off — is in this web page, not in the app.
I asked Eero, which makes routers that provide advanced network insights and which was recently bought by Amazonwhat they do with user data, and got a similar response. Top of the News.I'm about to move to the new Signature triple play tier with the Mbps internet speed. With my old triple play tier that gets Mbps I can never get a wifi speed faster than Mbps on the 5mhz channel with either a cellphone or tablet.
I think I would like to keep this gateway and hope that with the Mbps upgrade I will get faster speeds on my cellphone and tablet. I have two questions. And 2 what wifi speeds are people getting with the XB6?
Can anyone who has the Mbps tier or 1Gb tier post what speeds they get on their home wifi connection? Certainly I am interested in anyone who has the Mbps speed tier that get faster than Mbps on their cellphone or tablets. I'm upgrading to the tier that offers Mbps and have been told by Comcast I should install the same model XB6. But I have read a few bad reviews about the XB6 Wifi speed. Have you run a speed test with your cellphone or tablet while connected to the XB6 via your private wifi 5Mhz connection?
If so can you tell me what kind of speed you are getting? I'm hoping the XB6 will be faster. Did your install require any special tweaking or is that what you received straight out of the box? I have read many reviews where the wifi speeds are worse with the XB6. If I take the XB6 I have to buy a switch to feed all my hard wired desk top computers. So I don't want to make the change unless there is some very good benefit.
When I am connected to my local network on the 5. Can I assume that I will never reach the connection potential speed so Mbps is a good speed for a Mbps connection? I'm hoping for faster speeds when my tier level changes next week. With my current Mbps tier I get Mbps with my hard wired computer. We'll measure the speed from our servers to this computer.
Results are often lower than plan speeds due to WiFi conditions and device capabilities. It's important to differentiate between the speed of the Internet connection 'to your home' and the speed that reaches an individual device 'within your home' because they're two very different measurements. Internet speed tests, like this one or the test found at SpeedTest.
These test results are often lower than your plan speed due to various factors outside your Internet provider's control, including WiFi conditions and device capabilities. Good coverage means your device is getting a strong WiFi signal. That strong signal will also deliver as much speed as your device can handle. The placement of your Gateway is the key to ensuring both coverage and speed for your devices. Your home WiFi connection is only as good as your Gateway modem or routersince all devices connect through it.
We upgrade our smartphones regularly, but often neglect to upgrade the actual devices that connect us to the Internet. A Gateway that's a generation or two behind may not be able to deliver the fastest broadband speeds to the latest devices.
If you have an older Gateway modem or router consider an upgrade. Different devices handle speeds differently depending on make, model and age.
Consider the speed of a race car compared to a minivan. You wouldn't expect the same top speeds, and the same is true of your devices. The Internet speed delivered to your home is shared among all your devices.
If there are too many devices connected and using the Internet at once, there may not be enough speed to go around. The result will be a slow-down across all your devices. Depending on the activity, your device will need different connection speeds to operate smoothly.
